Old Fishing Nets from French Coast Become Vital Defense Against Enemy Drones in the War Zone
On the coastal quaysides of the Breton shoreline, accumulations of old nets now represent a familiar view.
The lifespan of marine harvesting nets generally extends between 12 and 24 months, after which they become deteriorated and irreparable.
Currently, this marine-grade mesh, previously employed for catching ocean species from the marine bottom, is being repurposed for another type of catch: enemy unmanned aircraft.
Humanitarian Initiative Repurposes Marine Waste
A coastal assistance group has transported two shipments of nets extending 280 kilometers to Ukraine to defend troops and residents along the combat zone where conflict intensifies.
The enemy deploys low-cost aerial vehicles equipped with combat payloads, guiding them by distance operation for spans of up to 25km.
"During the past 24 months, the war has evolved. Previously we never considered about drones, but now it's a drone war," commented a aid distribution manager.
Strategic Use of Trawling Gear
Defense units use the nets to construct passageways where aerial vehicle blades become trapped. This method has been likened to arachnids capturing insects in a web.
"Our contacts have informed us they don't need generic mesh material. Previous donations included numerous that are of no use," the coordinator added.
"Our specific shipments are made of horse hair and used for deep-sea fishing to catch strong marine species which are quite powerful and hit the nets with a strength similar to that of a drone."
Expanding Uses
Initially employed by healthcare workers defending field hospitals near the frontline, the nets are now employed on roads, crossings, the medical facility access points.
"It's remarkable that this elementary solution proves so effective," commented the charity president.
"We don't have lack of fishing nets in this region. It creates difficulty to know how to dispose of them as various companies that recycle them have closed."
Operational Difficulties
The aid association was formed after expatriate citizens sought help from the organizers requesting help regarding essential provisions and healthcare materials for their homeland.
Twenty volunteers have delivered two truck shipments of relief supplies 2,300km to the border crossing point.
"After being informed that Ukraine sought protective gear, the marine industry reacted rapidly," commented the organization leader.
Drone Warfare Evolution
Russia is using real-time visual vehicles comparable to those on the commercial market that can be controlled by distance operation and are then packed with explosives.
Enemy operators with live camera streams guide them to their objectives. In various locations, Ukrainian forces report that nothing can move without attracting the attention of swarms of "lethal" kamikaze drones.
Defensive Strategies
The trawling material are suspended from structures to establish protective passageways or used to conceal defensive positions and equipment.
Ukrainian drones are also fitted with fragments of material to release onto hostile aircraft.
In recent periods, Ukraine was facing more than numerous aerial vehicles each twenty-four hour period.
International Aid
Hundreds of tonnes of discarded marine material have also been donated by fishers in Nordic countries.
A previous fishing organization leader stated that local fishers are more than happy to assist the military campaign.
"They feel honored to know their former gear is going to contribute to safety," he stated publicly.
Financial Constraints
The charity no longer has the funds to dispatch additional materials this year and discussions were underway for Ukraine to send lorries to collect the material.
"We plan to support acquire the material and load them but we don't have the financial capacity to continue managing shipments ourselves," stated the charity spokesperson.
Practical Limitations
A defense forces representative reported that protective mesh corridors were being installed across the conflict area, about the majority of which is now stated as held and governed by opposition military.
She explained that opposition vehicle controllers were progressively discovering ways to circumvent the protection.
"Mesh does not represent a complete solution. They are just one element of safeguarding from drones," she clarified.
A retired market garden trader described that the people he interacted with were moved by the help from maritime regions.
"The reality that those in the marine sector the far region of Europe are dispatching gear to support their defensive measures has caused emotional reactions to their eyes," he finished.
