Individual Arrested Following at Least 50 Bullets Let Off from Croydon Park Residence
A man in his sixties is now in police custody following at least one person was shot, several persons wounded and several automobiles targeted by gunfire by a shooter within the inner western suburbs of Sydney.
As many as 100 rounds were fired across a span of two hours starting at 7:45 PM and ending around 9:30 PM on Sunday within the Croydon Park locality.
Authorities Launch Substantial Action
Roads were shut down and a lockdown was imposed on the area as police launched a major operation following accounts a suspect was haphazardly discharging a weapon at motorists, encompassing law enforcement automobiles, moving along Georges River Road.
The tactical operations squad was called in to detain an individual in his sixties from an apartment situated over a shop adjacent to the bustling roadway.
Police Leadership Provide An Account
Acting Supt Stephen Parry told reporters late Sunday precise figures were not available about the precise count of bullets let off “however, it's possible there were somewhere from 50 to 100 rounds that were fired”.
He mentioned several automobiles and properties experienced gunfire and destruction during the incident, though a more detailed understanding would be available in daylight.
Parry said the location was brought under control “promptly” and commended the participating police.
“They demonstrated exceptional courage through their actions,” he told reporters in a late-night press conference.
“They encountered rapid fire gun shots during several instances and deserve full recognition due to their conduct.”
He could not verify if police discharged their firearms as well during the standoff.
Top Officer Recounts Alarming Situation
Mal Lanyon, the NSW Police Commissioner remarked officers' body cameras demonstrated how close officers came to being hit as they ducked for protection during the “serious and terrifying incident”.
“It's possible to hear numerous gunshots, along with definite impacts, in close proximity to the camera,” Lanyon stated to 2GB radio in Sydney during Monday.
An officer who was fired upon had just graduated from the academy just five weeks prior, Lanyon mentioned.
A motive for the shooting has not been established though Lanyon stated no connection was identified with terrorist or gang-related actions.
Harm and Consequences
Paramedics treated sixteen individuals at the scene suffering from minor wounds.
- Some were injured from broken glass after their vehicle windows were shot.
- Others were treated for shock.
Several individuals were admitted to medical facilities after being treated by paramedics.
A taxi operator in his 50s remained in serious yet stable condition having sustained harm to his neck and head area.
Unprecedented Event for Sydney
It was a matter of luck that additional individuals were not injured, Trent King, the acting assistant commissioner commented.
“It’s unprecedented for Sydney to experience an incident of this nature, involving such an extensive volume of gunfire,” he informed ABC radio on Monday.
“We are extremely lucky that further destruction was avoided and certainly more injuries or indeed fatalities.”
King stated it must have been frightening for residents and bystanders and the police who responded.
“It can be stated that those initial police were fired upon. We have damaged police vehicles and we are extremely lucky that no police have been injured.”
Suspect in Police Custody
The male suspect aged 60 was under police custody at Bankstown hospital and was slated for questioning and officially charged during Monday.
Guns, such as a large-caliber rifle, were confiscated at the time of his arrest, authorities claimed.
Witness Account
One eyewitness to the shooting told the ABC he was traveling nearby and “heard a bang, bang, bang along the left side of the taxi”.
“Subsequently, I glanced beside me, and I spotted a few openings in the window on the passenger side,” he said.
“It escaped my notice that a hole was also present on the roof. I detected the scent of gunpowder, but I assumed as it coincided with the NRL grand final evening, [it was] somebody throwing firecrackers or something.”
