Gerrard in the running for Glasgow Rangers reappointment after Russell Martin gets the sack.

Steven Gerrard is being strongly considered for a shock return to the Scottish giants following the announced departure of manager the former Southampton coach.

The manager's disastrous Ibrox tenure comes to a close

Martin's ill-fated period in Glasgow ended with the gaffer exiting the Falkirk Stadium via a side door and a pre-arranged transport after a level finish which left the Glasgow side 11 points from the top of the Scottish Premiership after just seven fixtures.

Angry supporters had encircled the Rangers team bus in Falkirk, expressing their anger.

Rangers board hesitant to part with the manager

The Ibrox hierarchy had been unwilling to part with the former Swansea boss, who was only appointed in the summer, despite vociferous objections from fans.

However, there was an acknowledgement that the 39-year-old’s role had become untenable.

Rangers have managed only one win of their top-flight games to date, which has been coupled with dismal displays in European competition.

In total, Martin won only five of 17 official games, with a lackluster, unclear footballing philosophy that earned him few friends.

“While all transition periods need patience, performances have not met the club’s expectations,” stated a club announcement on the weekend.

“Deputy manager Gill, and first-team coach Williamson, will also be moving on. Russell and his staff have given their all throughout their time at the club. We are grateful for their work and wish them well for the time ahead.”

The former manager claimed the league with the team

The former England captain claimed the league with the Glasgow club in that campaign, their lone triumph since that year.

His work in the Scottish league before then, combined with setbacks at the Birmingham club, brings doubts about his managerial capabilities.

Yet he is greatly respected by the very fanbase the team are keen to get back on side.

The rehiring of the Liverpool icon, who previously worked in the Saudi league, would be widely welcomed.

Gerrard will also be conscious of what limited opportunities he has to be a gaffer in top-tier competitions.

The sacking will intensify scrutiny on the sporting director

The coaching change will increase pressure on Kevin Thelwell, the club's recruitment chief.

He had been very backing of the coach while announcing a net spend of £20m in the transfer window.

The ex-manager had agreed to a long-term deal.

The coach's earlier positions

Martin, who had formerly managed the Dons and Swansea, managed the south coast club to a rise to the English football's elite in the previous season after being hired the prior offseason.

He was let go last the end of the year after the Southampton managed only one win of their first 16 games.

He was chosen as Barry Ferguson’s replacement in June, after the caretaker boss had taken over from the fired Philippe Clement in winter.
