Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has declared his withdrawal from the Irish presidential election with "immediate effect".

He was scheduled to be one of three candidates vying for Ireland's head of state, together with TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

Nonetheless, late Sunday he announced through a declaration he had "made a mistake which did not align with his character and his personal standards."

"After weighing these points, I have decided to exit the election for president with immediate effect and return to the arms of my family," he said in a statement.

Additional details to come.
